Radio 1 will celebrate all things rock this June with special content and exclusive live performances from some of the hottest rock bands in the world, in the week leading up to Download Festival.
Radio 1’s rock champion Daniel P Carter dropped into Annie Mac’s show last night to announce details of ‘Radio 1 Rocks’ that will run from 7 – 14 June and include a Slipknot documentary, a live Maida Vale session featuring performances from Bullet For My Valentine, Black Peaks and PVRIS, rock themed Live Lounges, and a day full of rock music.
Radio 1 Rocks will kick off at 7pm on Sunday 7 June with a session from Swedish hardcore punk band Refused during The Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P Carter.
On Tuesday (9 June), during Clara Amfo’s show (10am-1pm) Enter Shikari will perform in Radio 1’s Live Lounge and at 9pm that evening there will be a special rock themed Radio 1 and 1Xtra Stories: Slipknot-Hellbound. During the hour long documentary, Daniel P Carter gains exclusive access to the band backstage in January at the final show of their first UK tour in six years, catching up with band members Corey Taylor, Shawn Crahan and Jim Root about their long awaited return to the UK following the death of founding member Paul Gray and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison.
On Wednesday 10 June, Bullet For My Valentine, Black Peaks and PVRIS will perform at the famous BBC Maida Vale studios in front of a live audience during a special rock-themed evening show co-hosted by Annie Mac and Daniel P Carter (7-9pm). PVRIS will then perform in Radio 1’s Live Lounge during Clara Amfo’s show (10am-1pm) on Thursday 11 June.
On Sunday 14 June, there will be a day of rock music on the station, with the week culminating in a two hour Download Festival special that evening during Daniel P Carter’s Radio 1 Rock Show.
Daniel P Carter says: “This week is always a huge one in the rock calendar. It’s one of my favourite weeks of the year. And the bands we have playing! PVRIS, Enter Shikari, Black Peaks, Refused and Bullet For My Valentine. Seriously, what’s not to like.”
You can watch performances from ‘Radio 1 Rocks’ on Radio 1’s BBC iPlayer channel.
